Hammocks

In October 1492, Christoph Columbus reports in his ship diary that during their shore leave on the island San Salvador (Bahamas) his sailors had seen “beds and covers” in the huts of the indigenous which “look like nets of cotton”. This is the first European report about “hamacas” as they were called in the Antilles.
Also, the Portuguese refer to “nets in which they sleep” common with the Tupiniquins in Eastern Brazil. The Spanish and Portuguese conquerors quickly took over this habit, since the hammocks offered big advantages compared to European beds:

-   the nets feel pleasantly cool
-   they help to relax by their light swinging movement
-   are quickly put away
-   are easy to move.

We import net hammocks made by Mayans in Yucatan, Mexico. They manufacture these handmade nets on special looms. Hung up on numerous sturdy nylon threads, the reclining surface is made from hundreds of cotton threads. The threads are intertwined without knots, thus the surface remains soft and elastic, adapting perfectly to the body – allowing to float calmly.
